Gilgit-Baltistan – July 21, 2025: A powerful flash flood struck the Thak-Babusar Road in Gilgit-Baltistan, resulting in the tragic deaths of three tourists, injuries to four others, and over 15 tourists reported missing. According to government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq, the flash flood came without warning and caused widespread destruction. Emergency response teams have rescued the injured and transferred them to nearby hospitals. One victim remains in critical condition. A search and rescue operation is underway, with the help of local communities.

“Dozens of stranded tourists have been moved to safer locations, and many are being sheltered by local residents,” said the spokesperson.

Communication Breakdown in Affected Areas

Due to the intensity of the rainfall and flooding, the telecommunication infrastructure in the region has collapsed. Disruption of the fiber optic network has cut off thousands of tourists from contacting their families across Pakistan.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

The Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has taken immediate notice of the disaster and directed all emergency services to utilize full resources to ensure the safe evacuation and rescue of trapped tourists. Relief operations are ongoing, focusing on providing food, shelter, and medical aid to the affected individuals.

Karakoram Highway and Chilas-Jalkhad Road Closed

In a related development, flash floods in the Diamer district have also blocked key transportation routes including the Karakoram Highway and Chilas-Jalkhad Road at multiple points. Tourists and travelers have been left stranded as landslides and overflowing streams have cut off access.
